Now you can tap on BART using a contactless bank card to pay for your trip.

This payment option is coming soon to all transit agencies across the Bay Area.

Tap to Pay with a Contactless Bank Card

Now you can ride BART by tapping your contactless bank card at the BART fare gate. Just look for the contactless symbol on your plastic card or pay using a payment card in your mobile wallet.

Accepted card brands are Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover.

Please note: You will be charged the full adult fare when using a contactless bank card to pay for transit.

Look for the contactless symbol on the front or back of your bank card. If you see this symbol, you can use your contactless bank card to pay for BART.

  • Remove the physical payment card from your wallet—or pull up the card you would like to use on your phone.
  • Center your card or device over the Clipper reader target that says "Hold to Pay."
  • On a successful tap, a "Pass Accepted" screen will appear on the machine and the BART gates will open.

If you have more than one card in your mobile wallet, you must choose which card you want to use before you tap it at a Clipper reader. Otherwise, the Clipper reader will use your wallet's default payment card.

iPhone users can designate their default payment card with Express Transit in Apple Wallet. You can do this directly in the Apple Wallet app by tapping the payment card you'd like to use and tapping the three dots in the top right corner.

Android users can designate their default payment in Google Wallet. You can do this directly in the Google Wallet app by choosing the card you want, tapping "Details" at the bottom and selecting "Make default for tap to pay" for contactless payments.

You will not receive a refund if a different card is charged.

With group travel, each person traveling must use a separate contactless bank card.

No. BART has round-trip fares that require you to tap in and out with the same card or device. Whatever payment method you used to tap on, you use to tap off.

You can easily review your transaction history with your contactless bank card on our website at clippercard.com/download-bankcard-history by entering your payment card's number, expiration and CVV. You can also check your bank statement, where you will see the transaction listed as Clipper-Transit Fare.
